Product Overview:
This is a planetary gearbox design that has been developed with the FIRST Robotics community in mind. These are easily configurable with multiple options and add-ons, while keeping the design small and simple. Components are CNC machined for tight tolerances, and high precision. A CIM mounting kit comes with the gearbox.

Stage Configuration
You can add stages to any BB220 gearbox so it is possible to convert a any 16:1 to a 64:1 by adding another stage regardless of if the 16:1 had a one piece or two piece ringgear. Likewise the 64:1 gearboxes can be reconfigured to 16:1 or 4:1 by removing stages.

The output stage (one next to the front block) is longer than the add on stages. A gearbox can only have one output stage and it must be mounted next to the output block. In theory any number of add on stages can be used but in practice 4 or 5 is about the limit due to tolerance stack up.

The stages of a ringgear are marked for easy identification. You will notice sets of dimples on the ringears - one set for each stage. A set of 4 dimples is an output stage, a set of 2 dimples is an add on stage. It is to important note that the stage with 4 dimples needs to always be mounted next to the output block.

A 4:1 with two add on stages or a 16:1 with one add on stage and be functionally equivalent to the 64:1.

Maximum Torque Recommendation
We recommend maximum torque not exceed 85 ft-lb. It is possible to mount motors that will exceed this in higher gear reductions. Higher reduction gearboxes should be utilized primarily for speed reduction. Designs that will exceed 85 ft-lb should include a method of limiting torque to prevent damage to the gearbox.

Some Assembly Required
Gearbox will be delivered assembled and tested; however, it will need to be disassembled to grease and mount the motor prior to use. No special tools are required, typically only a screw driver and allen wrench. A small arbor press or bench vise is useful for pushing the pinion onto the motor shaft. The gearbox MUST BE GREASED prior to use, grease IS NOT INCLUDED and must be purchased separately. We recommend our Red Tacky Grease.

This gearbox will mount one CIM (am-0255). MOTOR NOT INCLUDED - Motor must be purchased separately.

Mounting Hardware Included
Gearbox includes one mounting kit. Mounting kit contains everything required to mount 1 motor including pinion, screws, and lock washers to attach the motor to the gearbox.

Important Note
Mounting a large load to the end of an unsupported shaft may damage the gearmotor. The shafts on these motors are supported by two ball bearings making them fairly rugged; however, we do not recommend them to be used with large overhung loads. We recommend using a design that supports the end of the shaft. If it is not possible to support the end of the shaft, we recommend mounting the load as close to the face of the gearmotor as possible and cutting the shaft to length.
