Now you can customize a planetary gearbox your own way! This is a planetary gearbox design that has been developed with the FIRST Robotics community in mind. These are easily configurable with multiple options and add-ons, while keeping the design small and simple. Components are CNC machined for tight tolerances, and high precision. A CIM mounting kit comes with the gearbox.

The ringgears are marked with a dimple pattern that represents the stage. 2 dimples is a single stage and 4 dimples is an output stage. This 4:1 gearbox has ringgears that are marked with one set of two dimples and one set of four - representing a single stage followed by an output stage. In order to add a stage, you must use a ringgear that is marked with one set of 2 dimples - representing a single stage, and this must be added to the motor side.
Every gearbox must have one and only one ringgear marked with a set of four dimples and it must be the ringgear next to the output shaft. You CAN NOT take the ringgear with 4 dimples from this 16:1 gearbox and use it as an addon stage - it is longer than an addon ringgear.
Maximum torque recommendation
We recommend maximum torque not exceed 85 ft-lb. It is possible to mount motors that will exceed this in higher gear reductions. Higher reduction gearboxes should be utilized primarily for speed reduction. Designs that will exceed 85 ft-lb should include a method of limiting torque to prevent damage to the gearbox.
Some Assembly Required
Gearbox will be delivered assembled and tested; however, it will need to be disassembled to grease and mount the motor prior to use. No special tools are required, typically only a screw driver and allen wrench. A small arbor press or bench vise is useful for pushing the pinion onto the motor shaft. The gearbox MUST BE GREASED prior to use, grease IS NOT INCLUDED and must be purchased separately. We recommend our Red Tacky Grease.
This gearbox will mount one CIM (am-0255). MOTOR NOT INCLUDED - Motor must be purchased separately.
Mounting Hardware Included
Gearbox includes one mounting kit. Mounting kit contains everything required to mount 1 motor including pinion, screws, and lock washers to attach the motor to the gearbox.
Mounting a large load to the end of an unsupported shaft may damage the gearmotor. The shafts on these motors are supported by two ball bearings making them fairly rugged; however, we do not recommend them to be used with large overhung loads. We recommend using a design that supports the end of the shaft. If it is not possible to support the end of the shaft, we recommend mounting the load as close to the face of the gearmotor as possible and cutting the shaft to length.
