A great start to being able to use a string pot sensor is here. This kit comes with the enclosure where the potentiometer and spring tensioned wire meet. If you would like to download a 3d Printer file to print your own enclosure, check out the String Potentiometer Kit (no housing).

This is not an easy kit to build, please be aware we recommend to get the pre-assembled model.

A portion of the proceeds of this sale will be given to Chap Robotics FRC team 2468, who developed and used this idea on their competition robots.

Included Hardware:
  • Three - 4-40 x 0.75" Screws (to seal the enclosure)
  • One - 4-40 x 3/8" SHCS (to capture the potentiometer shaft)
  • One - Retractable String component
  • One - Precision Potentiometer, 10 turn, 5Koh
  • One - String Potentiometer Enclosure
Specifications:
  • Retractable String Length: ~27 inch
  • Spool Circumference: 2.985 in (+/- 0.1)
Note: With the retractable string provided you will only be able to get about eight to nine turns out of the ten turn potentiometer. To get the full range, use the spring from the retractable string component and a 30" string instead.

The kit wasn't hard to assemble, with the addition of a thorough addendum that an AndyMark engineer kindly prepared and sent me, to guide me through a modest change in the kit. Thanks for that - superb service.

Functionally, the cord has a slightly jerky movement. Perhaps I can open up the workings and adjust that, I haven't tried that yet.

The net pot range, assembled, is 0 to 3.8k ohms. My application will use a fraction of that.

The mounting feet seem a bit on the fragile side. I'd have been happier if there were two complete feet rather than the single foot, and if the toes were slightly fatter.

My plan is to use this for sensing the position of the flight controls in a homebuilt airplane. I'll need two more for that. The ohm range is fine and the cord extension range is fine. The non-steady cord retraction and the single foot with narrow toes are the main concerns. The unit is small and light and it was interesting to assemble and not too hard.

I was looking for a low cost method of performing real time linear position measurements.  Your string potentiometer kit is priced right and has the necessary performance for the project I'm working on.  Thanks for providing this product for sale.
