Product Overview

FIRST Tech Challenge Note: This product is NOT legal for FTC. We recommend our Stealth Wheel for applications where digging into the surface is a concern.

Product Overview:
This is a 4 inch diameter wheel with HiGrip tread. The design of this wheel is very similar to our popular 6" HiGrip wheel, but with a smaller, 4" diameter. We feel that these wheels are a more durable option for teams' drivetrains. While they provide good traction, they make for a maintenance-free wheel for the average team. Under normal circumstances, we feel that these wheels will last most FIRST Robotics Competition teams the entire season. No bearings or hubs are included in this wheel.

Usage:
Use #10-24x3/4 thread forming screws to attach sprockets or hubs to this wheel. Many thread locking materials are not compatible with polycarbonate and can eat away at the plastic. Be sure to check which adhesives are okay to use with this product. This link will allow you to check which materials are okay to use with what adhesives, https://bit.ly/loctitematerialcheck

With Axle and Hub:
  • If you wish to drive this wheel with an Axle and Hub, you can pick your hub by fitting any of the AndyMark hubs (not included) to this wheel. If this is your choice, then no bearing is needed. Use #10-24x3/4 thread forming screws to fasten a hub to this wheel.
With Sprocket:
  • If you wish to drive this wheel with a sprocket, then the sprocket needs to be attached to the side of the wheel, and two ball bearings need to be pressed into the wheel (one on each side). The ball bearing must have a 1.125" od. For a 1/2" id, use am-0181 or am-0029. For a 3/8" id, use am-0209. Use #10-24x3/4 thread forming screws to fasten the sprocket to the wheel.
With Bearings:
  • To press bearings into this wheel (for a free spinning wheel or for use with a sprocket), two ball bearings need to be pressed into the wheel (one on each side). The ball bearing must have a 1.125" od. For a 1/2" id, use am-0181 or am-0029. For a 3/8" id, use am-0209.

    "1.067?"

"Looking at the specs of our current robot, I come across a coefficient of friction of 1.067, which should be physically impossible. I have a hard time believing this, although such a feat could be accomplished on a carpet. But still, the robot accelerates at a seemingly impossible rate, running 2 CIMs on each side, and we are loving this "omnipotent" traction."

Great Wheels: Excellent Grip, Robust, Inexpensive!

FRC Team #1519, Mechanical Mayhem, used the 4" HiGrip Wheels on our 2014 Robot for our 8WD. We played 63 official matches this year, without any failures of the wheels or reasons to complain about them. The grip on the wheels is excellent, with manageable wear. We'd be game to use these again in the future!

The AM14U is excellent straight out of the box with no modifications. I hope it performs similarly during the regional competitions.

    No compatibility with Tetrix parts

To utilize these wheels with FTC/Tetrix, a custom adapter needs to be created. I would suggest AndyMark could sell a lot more of them if an adapter was also available. Other caution is the tread pattern is of fairly high durometer material and has square edges. These edges could damage the foam tiles used in FTC competitions. Radius-ing the tread edges in the mold would solve the problem.
